大東明子告訴她，善因寺一個老和尚告訴他，寺裏有意選他當沙彌尾，不過還沒有定，要等主事的和尚商議。
大東“什麼单‘沙彌尾’?"
大東“放一堂戒，要選出一個沙彌頭，一個沙彌尾。沙彌頭要老成，要會念很多經。沙彌尾要年晴，聰明，相貌好。”大東“當了沙彌尾跟別的和尚有什麼不同？”
大東“沙彌頭，沙彌尾，將來都能當方丈。現在的方丈退居了，就當。石橋原來就是沙彌尾。”大東"Will you be a tail-Samir?"大東"I don't know yet."
大東"Will you be in charge of Shanyin Temple as soon as you've become an abbot? Oh, what a large temple you'll run!"大東"It's too early to talk like that."大東After rowing for a while, she said to Mingzi in earnest, "You mustn't be an abbot!"大東"All right, I won't."

大東“你當方丈，管善因寺？管這麼大一個廟？!"大東“還早吶！”
大東劃了一氣，小英子説：“你不要當方丈！”大東“好，不當。”
大東“你也不要當沙彌尾！”
大東“好，不當。”
大東又劃了一氣，看見那一片蘆花硝子了。
大東小英子忽然把槳放下，走到船尾，趴在明子的耳朵旁邊，小聲地説：“我給你當老婆，你要不要？”大東明子眼睛鼓得大大的。
大東“你説話呀！”
大東明子説：“绝。”
大東“什麼单‘绝’呀！要不要，要不要？”
大東"Yes, I want you!" he shouted.大東"What are you shouting for?"大東"I want you!" he said again in a low voice.大東"Row quickly!"
大東Xiaoyingzi hopped back to her seat. Both rowed as fast as they could; the boat sped into the reeds.大東The reeds had greyish-purple tassels, soft and smooth like rings of shining silk thread. In some places, they had grown spikes like small red candles. On the water surface, there were duckweeds, blue and purple in colour and long-legged mosquitoes and water spiders. The little white flowers of the wild water chestnuts had already blossomed. Then a lapwing, startled, flapped its wings and flew away across the reeds to a safe distance.大東...
